The 2025 World Match Racing Tour Macao Leg Concludes! Recap of All Thrilling Highlights

From January 8 to 12, the highly anticipated World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) Macao Stage came to a successful close on the waters of Ká-Hó Bay, Coloane, Macao. Co-hosted by the Sports Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region, MGM and Polaris Sailing Event Management, this event served as the opening leg of the 2025 WMRT Season. Twelve elite teams from the United States, Italy, New Zealand, France, the United Kingdom, Australia and Sweden competed fiercely aboard identical Fareast 28R one-design racing sailboats.

The regatta featured a host of standout highlights:

1. All-Female Sailing Team Shines at WMRT

Pauline Courtois claimed the title of the 2024 Women’s World Match Racing Tour just last December with an unbeatable 21–0 record. Widely recognized as the leading figure in women’s match racing, she brought her all-female squad to compete on the WMRT stage. The team secured a top-four group-stage finish with six wins and five losses. Though they narrowly lost to world No.1 Chris Poole in the quarterfinals, their outstanding performance and unyielding grit posed formidable challenges to all rival crews. They shattered the long-held stereotype that women are inferior to men in sailing, proving female teams can deliver elite-caliber competitiveness and prowess at the sport’s highest level, matching any male crew.

2. Veteran Sailors Prove Experience Prevails

Two of the regatta’s oldest competitors delivered exceptional results: 47-year-old Ian Williams and 51-year-old Gavin Brady. Against a field of sailors in their 20s and 30s, they leveraged decades of racing wisdom and polished tactical skill to outmaneuver younger opponents. In the group qualifying rounds, Ian Williams posted a flawless 11–0 scoreline, while Gavin Brady went 10–1, taking the top two overall rankings. Both advanced to the final four. Ian Williams ultimately claimed the championship with an outstanding 20–1 race record, once again demonstrating that sailing rewards accumulated experience, with veteran skippers remaining dominant contenders on the international circuit.

3. Dramatic Rematch Final

One month prior, Ian Williams defeated Nick Egnot-Johnson, winner of the 2022 WMRT Finals, 3–2 at the 2024 WMRT Shenzhen Bao’an Final to defend his crown and secure his eighth World Match Racing Championship title. At the WMRT Macao Stage, the two rivals met once more in the gold-medal match. Nick Egnot-Johnson handed Ian Williams his sole defeat of the entire event, yet fell short with a 1–3 scoreline, marking his second consecutive final loss to Williams.

4. Fareast 28R Emerges as the Top Choice for International Regattas

The Fareast 28R has become a ubiquitous fixture at premier sailing competitions worldwide. It served as the official one-design boat for the China Cup International Regatta, Round Hainan Regatta, King’s Cup Regatta, 2024 Youth World Match Racing Tour, 2024 Women’s World Match Racing Tour, 2024 WMRT Shenzhen Bao’an Final, and the 2025 WMRT Macao Stage featured in this recap.
