Gained Rich Insights! International Optimist Measurement Training Course Concludes Successfully at Fareast

On March 22, the two-day 2024 China Regional International Optimist Dinghy Measurement Training Course came to a successful close at Fareast’s Qidong factory. Hosted by the International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA), supported by the Chinese Yachting Association, and undertaken by Shanghai Fareast Composites Technology Co., Ltd., the training drew over 40 applicants from across mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau after open registration. Following qualification reviews by IODA, a total of 27 participants were selected to attend the programme.

This marks the first IODA international measurement training course held in China in nearly a decade. Olive Parker, Chair of the IODA Technical Committee, and international measurer Jean Luc Gauthier travelled to China to deliver lectures, demonstrating the high priority IODA places on this training event.

As the host venue, Fareast spared no effort to deliver a top-tier learning environment, supplying premium equipment and comprehensive services for all trainees. Lu Weifeng, Founder of Fareast, guided instructors and participants on a factory tour, elaborating on the full manufacturing workflow of Optimist dinghies and offering the group first-hand insight into the history and growth of Optimist sailing in China.

The curriculum covered categories and qualification criteria for official measurers, alongside guidance on how to become a competent certified measurer. During practical sessions, instructors led participants through hands-on measurement procedures for hulls and all associated fittings. Trainees engaged enthusiastically, expanding their theoretical knowledge while sharpening practical operational skills.

“I am confident all participants will grow into outstanding measurers, and we hope to see more qualified Chinese measurers take part in international Optimist regattas going forward,” commented Olive Parker, Chair of the IODA Technical Committee, offering high praise and positive expectations for the group.

Committed to further boosting the development of Optimist sailing in China, Fareast devoted extensive resources to full preparation for this training programme.

Founded in 2002, Fareast began manufacturing Optimist dinghies that same year and obtained official ISAF Optimist class certification, kicking off its long-standing journey as a leading Optimist builder. By 2007, Fareast had grown into China’s largest small sailboat manufacturer, a position it retains to this day. To date, Fareast has sold more than 10,000 Optimist dinghies worldwide. Fareast-built Optimists are widely used at prestigious competitions including World Championships, Asian Championships, Asian Games, China National Games and African Championships, delivering reliable equipment support for youth sailing development across the globe.

The smooth running of the international Optimist measurement training also received strong backing from the Chinese Yachting Association. “Fareast is one of only three certified domestic manufacturers of Optimist dinghies. We chose to host this training here so participants and IODA officials could gain an in-depth understanding of Optimist production, which greatly facilitates delivery of the measurement curriculum. This training has not only benefited our trainees tremendously but also allowed IODA to witness the promising prospects of Optimist sailing in China. Ultimately, we all strive to contribute to the global growth of Optimist sailing and cultivate more professional talent,” said Wang Jiaxin, Deputy Secretary-General and Head of the Competition Department of the Chinese Yachting Association.
